Getting questions wrong that they already know?

Reading carefully is the first step toward literacy. When children miss questions they actually know, the cause may be skim-reading, not a gap in knowledge.

  1. Their eyes skim over the passage

  2. They skip the instructions and look only at the numbers

  3. And when they read silently, nobody can see what was missed

Read it out loud, and nothing can be skipped.

How it works

  1. Add a book

Scan the barcode or the cover, or type the title — or start right away with a Korean picture book from the Kkomi Shelf.

  2. Read it out loud

Your child reads aloud, and Kkomi listens.

  3. Questions that widen thinking

After reading, Kkomi asks questions pitched to your child.

  4. Reading & thinking report

You follow both sides — how they read and how they think.

What Kkomi does

Read-aloud accuracy

For the Korean picture books on the Kkomi Shelf, Kkomi lines up your child's reading with the printed text, word by word. Skipped and swapped words are marked, and self-corrections never count against them. It is based on the running-record method teachers use.

Talking with Kkomi

More than fact quizzes: Kkomi moves on to open-ended questions like "Why do you think so?" — designed with reference to the principles of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP).

Kkomi has been developed independently from and is not endorsed by the International Baccalaureate (IB).

Korean books in Korean, English books in English

Your child reads in the book's own language, and Kkomi asks in that language too. When the book's language isn't your app language, Kkomi's words usually come with subtitles in your language.

Also in Kkomi

  • Reading fluency check

When you add your child, they read one Korean picture book aloud so you can see their reading stage and pace. It's a required step when adding a child — for reference, not a diagnosis.

  • Kkomi Words

Your child looks at a picture scene, explains a Korean word in their own words, then makes a sentence with it.

  • A daily reading habit

A daily reading goal you set and a reading streak help your child keep reading, day after day.

You can use it with peace of mind

  • Growth, not a score

We look at how your child has changed from their own records — not at a ranking against other children.

  • Not a diagnostic tool

These records are for reference and do not replace a medical or professional assessment.

  • Spoken answers aren't kept

Your child's spoken answers to Kkomi are never stored. Recordings of completed read‑alouds are deleted automatically once their 7‑day retention period has passed.

  • Guardian consent comes first

For a child under 14, we process their information only after their legal guardian has given consent.

  • Safe conversations

In book conversations, Kkomi's replies and your child's answers go through an inappropriate-content check. Conversations center on the book your child just read, and you can reread every one.

  • Your records, your call

Export records or delete your child's profile or your account anytime from the guardian screens. Voice recordings and analysis results are never used for advertising.

Frequently asked questions

What is Kkomi?

Kkomi is an AI read-aloud companion app for children, made by LEADKIDS in South Korea. Your child reads a picture book aloud and Kkomi listens; afterwards, Kkomi talks with them using questions that widen their thinking. Guardians see how reading and thinking grow in a report.

What age is Kkomi for?

Kkomi is made for children in grades 1–6 (ages 6–12). You choose your child's grade when you add them, and Kkomi asks questions at a level suited to that grade. For English picture books, the questions may be easier than the grade level.

Which books work with Kkomi? Can we use books from home?

Kkomi has two shelves. The Kkomi Shelf has Korean picture books we have prepared, and on My Home Shelf you add any paper book from home or the library by its barcode, cover or title. Whichever book your child reads aloud, Kkomi listens and asks questions about that book.

Does Kkomi work with English picture books?

Yes. English picture books are read in English, and Kkomi asks its questions in English; Korean books are read and discussed in Korean. When the book's language differs from your app language, Kkomi's words usually appear with subtitles in your app language too. Word-by-word reading accuracy is scored only for the Korean picture books on the Kkomi Shelf; with English books, Kkomi listens and asks questions.

How does Kkomi score reading accuracy?

For the Korean picture books on the Kkomi Shelf, Kkomi lines up your child's reading with the printed text word by word. Skipped and swapped words are marked, and self-corrections are not penalized. It is based on the running-record method teachers use, and it is a reference for comparing with your child's own past readings, not a diagnosis. For My Home Shelf books, Kkomi listens and asks questions but does not score accuracy.

What questions does Kkomi ask? Is it an official IB program?

Kkomi goes beyond fact quizzes to open-ended questions like "Why do you think so?" that ask what your child thinks. They were designed by LEADKIDS with reference to the principles of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). Kkomi has been developed independently from and is not endorsed by the International Baccalaureate (IB).

What can guardians see in Kkomi?

The week's readings and read-aloud time, how reading accuracy is changing, and growth in three strands — conceptual understanding, thinking and communication. You can also reread, as text, each conversation your child had with Kkomi.

What devices does Kkomi work on? Do I need to install an app?

Kkomi runs in Safari or Chrome on a phone or tablet with no install, and you can add it to your home screen to use it like an app. Reading aloud needs a microphone and an internet connection. On iPhone, you can also install the app's public beta through Apple TestFlight.

Does Kkomi cost anything?

Right now you can use Kkomi for free on the web. You start without any payment details, and no card is required.

How are my child's voice and records kept?

Your child's spoken answers to Kkomi are not stored, and recordings of completed read‑alouds are deleted automatically once their 7‑day retention period has passed. Service providers abroad store account and reading records and handle voice processing (including short-term storage of read-aloud audio), AI questions and scoring, and similar tasks (an international transfer). Guardians can export records or delete a child's profile or the account at any time; the privacy policy has the details.

Is it safe for my child to talk with Kkomi?

In book conversations with Kkomi, both Kkomi's replies and your child's answers go through an inappropriate-content check. Conversations center on the book your child has just read, guardians can read them anytime, and your child's spoken answers are not stored.

Is Kkomi a diagnostic tool?

No. Kkomi's records are for reference and do not replace a medical or professional assessment. Kkomi never ranks children against each other; it shows change against your child's own past records.

How do we get started with Kkomi?

Sign up, then add your child. While adding them, your child reads one Korean picture book aloud so Kkomi can see their reading stage; after that, you can start reading with Kkomi. There is no application form and no screening.

Who makes Kkomi, and how do I get in touch?

Kkomi is made and run by LEADKIDS (리드키즈) in South Korea. For questions, write to [email protected].
